St. Augustine: The Most Popular Day Trip From Daytona Beach
St. Augustine is about an hour north, and it’s the oldest continuously occupied European-founded city in the country. Cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial architecture, and Castillo de San Marcos anchor the historic district right on the waterfront. Plan on spending most of the day here. Between the fort, wandering St. George Street, and lunch somewhere downtown, it fills up faster than people expect. Parking downtown gets tight by late morning, so an early start helps.
Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral
About an hour south, Kennedy Space Center is one of the more genuinely impressive day trips in the state. Actual rockets, real mission history, and depending on the launch schedule, a chance to watch one go up from a few miles away. Give yourself a full day here too. Between the visitor complex, the bus tour out to the launch pads, and the Atlantis exhibit, there’s more to see than a quick stop allows.
Orlando’s Theme Parks
If your group wants a theme park day, Orlando is about an hour west. Disney World, Universal, and Disney Springs are all within reach, close enough for a single long day, though most people end up wishing they’d planned two. If you’re only doing one park day, build in extra drive time both ways since traffic through the Orlando area can back up quickly, especially in the afternoon.
Blue Spring State Park
Closer to home, Blue Spring State Park is about 45 minutes west and one of Florida’s best spring-fed swimming spots when the swimming area is open in the warmer months, with clear, constant 72-degree water. In winter, hundreds of manatees move into the spring to escape the cold water in the St. Johns River, and the swimming area closes to protect them during that stretch, but the viewing alone is worth the drive. Either season, it’s a good change of pace from a straight beach day.
The Easy Option: New Smyrna Beach
If a full day trip sounds like more than you want to commit to, New Smyrna Beach is about 30 minutes south and a much lighter lift. It’s a working waterfront town with a surf culture of its own, a walkable downtown with local galleries and shops, and a quieter stretch of beach if you want a change of scenery without a long drive. It’s an easy half-day, which makes it a good option if you’ve already got other plans for the rest of the day.

Central Florida distances look short on a map, but traffic and parking eat into the day fast, especially around Orlando and St. Augustine. Leave earlier than feels necessary if you’re headed to Orlando or Kennedy Space Center, both get busy by mid-morning. And don’t overplan the evening, whether you make it back for dinner or just grab something along the way, you’re still on vacation either way.
